Zoom G1Xon Multieffects Review

Main features

The front panel. Only some buttons and a knob.

As we can see in the image above, this Zoom product is very simple and with few controls.

Patches settings in the menù.

100, up to 5 simultaneously, organized in 5 main modules, more 5 patches that can be controlled by the expression pedal. With the help of the menù, really complete, if we consider the dimensions of this device, the user can easily modify the order of the effects, but also the type and all the parameters.

  • Dynamics/Filter
  • Eleven patches with equalizers, compressors, filters, noise gates and wah. Some of them are emulations of well-known pedals (for instance dbx 160, MXR Dynacomp, Z. Vex Seek-Wah and Moog Filter). Obviously, the user can create his own effects with some very interesting functions, in a so small and compact device, like parametric equalization, automatic attack and a Zoom patented algorithm for noise reduction.

  • Overdrive/Distortion
  • Twelve options. Some emulations (Fuzz Face, Marshall Guv'nor, Boss OD-1, Big Muff, Pro Co Rat and MXR Distortion+), more a simulator of acoustic guitar.

  • Amp
  • Twenty-two, derived from the sound of the models of the most important manufacturers (Mesa Boogie, Fender, Hiwatt, Marshall, Diezel Herbert, Matchless, Orange, Bogner).

  • Modulation/Special
  • The user can choose between sixteen different types of chorus, phaser, flanger, tremolo, pitch shift, vibrato. In addition there is an intelligent harmonizer (Zoom HPS), a ring modulator and an endlessy rhythmic slider. Some patches are the reproduction of the sound of very famous pedals (Boss CH-1, TC Electronic Corona and ADA Flanger).

  • Delay/Reverb
  • Fourteen different types with delay time up to 4 seconds.

General characteristics

Let's see the list of the main features of this interesting Zoom multieffects.

  • Built-in expression pedal.
  • It can control any selected parameter, such as, for instance, delay time or modulation speed, but also gain and volume, both for input and output. A very interesting and useful function is a special calibration procedure to customize pedal sensitivity.

    Calibration of the sensitivity.
  • 100 guitar effects and amp models.
  • Up to 5 simultaneously (in any order).

  • 68 rhythm patterns.
  • Many available genres, from Rock to Jazz, from Emo to Motown, and various rhytms (4/4, 6/8, 3/4, 5/4 and so on).

  • Looper.
  • Up to 30 seconds (16-bit, 44.1kHz). With automatic quantization.

Simple, but with the automatic quantization.

There is also an Eco option.
  • Input
  • Standard mono (1/4"). Impedance: 470 kOhms. It accepts both active and passive instruments.

  • Auxiliary input

    Adjusting of the display.
  • A/D and D/A conversion
  • 24-bit, 120x

  • S/N ratio
  • 119dB

  • Dimensions
  • 154.8mm(D) x 237mm(W) x 50mm (H)

  • Weight

Final opinion

If we consider the price of the G1Xon, about 75 euros, this Zoom product is certainly an excellent choice. All the functions are easily accessible and the use of the device, also in a live contest, turns out very fast. The quality of the effects is good. Like always.

Effects (Pedals and Floorboards)

  • Distortion | Ibanez

Two channels: the first is an Overdrive, while the second is a Distortion. The bright/save switch is really curious and useless. A slight hum can be present, but only with some pickups.

  • Nova System/Limited
  • Floorboards | TC Electronic
    Nova System/Limited

The most important characteristic of this multi-effects is the NDT (Nova Drive Technology), the analog circuit. The Nova System produces really a great sound and with 30 factory presets and 60 programmable presets turns out very flexible.

  • Metal Master
  • Distortion | Digitech
    Metal Master

This Digitech pedal is equipped with the AudioDNA technology and provides three different distortions, two controls for the equalization, an output designed for an amplifier and an output for mixer with a speaker emulator.
