TC Electronic NR-1 Nova Effects Pedal : Review

NR-1 Nova

Types

It provides 5 different reverbs. For each effect the user can choose between some sub-types. Well, let's see the list with a short explanation of each type.

Types

Room

  • Small, Medium, Large
  • The names explain everything.

  • Tiled
  • The classic bathroom reverb with a large number of reflections. The manual recommends this effect to add a bit of color to the sound.

Spring

  • Plain
  • Compared to the other two types, the most neutral.

  • Classic
  • The emulation of the classic Spring.

  • Vintage
  • With this effect the NR-1 emulates the Spring of an old amp.

Hall

  • Small, Medium
  • The reproduction of the reverberation in two different size environments.

  • Church
  • Very famous and with many reflections.

  • Classic
  • The emulation of the classic TC Electronic reverb. The manual recomends a medium decay time, but also a prolonged time.

  • Concert
  • A long decay time, but that preserves the tone of the original sound.

Plate

  • Tin
  • Analog. Perfect for Funky.

  • Silver
  • A sort of perfect balance between the two other types, Tin and Gold. Rather bright and with a great diffusion.

  • Gold
  • The main characteristics of the Plate reverb are the brightness and the diffusion. Here these two characteristics are particularly present.

Specials

  • Stomp
  • The reproduction of a generic stompbox reverb.

  • Ambience
  • It emulates a room with a very simple structure.

  • Modulated
  • The modulations are generated with a very complex Low Frequency Oscillator.

Controls

Controls
  • Decay
  • The decay time. It adjusts, fundamentally, the length of the effect.

  • Pre-Delay
  • The time between the original signal and the effect. If your sound is a bit confused you can add more Pre-Delay.

  • Color
  • Substantially, an equalizer that adjusts the high-end frequencies.

  • Dynamics
  • Derived from the TC 2290. When it is active the dynamics of the input signal controls the level of the Reverb.

  • Mix
  • The mix between the original signal of the guitar and the effect.

Opinion

Certainly, an excellent device. The NR-1 is expensive, but it will not disappoint. This TC Electronic product provides a good sound for every possible situation, and the overall quality is always very valid.

Effects (Pedals and Floorboards)

    Tone Driver
  • Distortion | Digitech
    Tone Driver

The Morph function is the most important characteristic. It allows three different options. The output for a mixer, or for a recorder, can be very useful. In my opinion this distortion pedal is a perfect product for Blues and Rock.

  • DS-1
  • Distortion | Boss
    DS-1

With a correct use of the Tone control this pedal can work well, but it depends on many factors. Anyhow, it is easy to use and, at a very low cost, it provides a rather valid and flexible distortion. Settings of the DS-1 that can be a good starting point.

  • CE-5
  • Chorus | Boss
    CE-5

With 4 controls this chorus pedal turns out rather flexible. Yes, the sound is digital, and this is clear, but the overall result is valid. The CE-5 manual includes some very interesting settings.
