Digitech RP55 Multieffects Review

RP55

Complete and cheap

It doesn't put any parameter for the adjustings at user disposal, but only the choice among some effects and emulated amplifiers. Anyhow, the 24-bit converters and the new AudioDNA chip testify the modern electronics. Obviously, this product is suitable to a beginner. For an expert guitarist it is rather limited. As a whole, however, the final result is good and all the necessary is available, above all if we consider the price, really low. Let's see the main characteristics of this Digitech device.

Effects

In a single patch can be used 8 effects at a time. Fundamentally, is available all the necessary for the guitarist, also with some variations. Now we can see the list.

  • Wah (Dunlop Cry Baby, Boutique)
  • Compressor/Limiter
  • Equalization (3-Band)
  • Noise Gate/Auto Swell
  • Chorus
  • Flanger
  • Phaser
  • Pitch (Whammy, Shift, Detune)
  • Vibrato/Rotary
  • Tremolo/Panner
  • Envelope/Auto Ya
  • Delay (Mono, Analog, Pong)
  • Reverb (Room, Hall, Plate, Church, Arena, Spring)

Amp models and Cabinets

It is equipped with a speaker emulator with some classic and very famous amps, for example, the '65 Fender Twin Reverb, the Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier, the '57 Fender Tweed Deluxe and the '63 Vox AC30. In addition, it provides the emulation of some generic amps for clean and distortion. The Cabinets can be 2x12 or 4x12.

The drum machine

It is equipped with 30 patterns, substantially, all the possible musical genres. The RP55 is, certainly, a good choice for a beginner, and a built-in drum machine can be a good help for who studies. If we want, an important added value for a so cheap product.

The additional input

Another added value is the additional input for an expression pedal that can be a volume or a Wah.

Patches

40 are presets, while other 40 are for the user, so they can be edited and saved.

General opinion

Like i said, the RP55 is a good choice for a beginner. It provides all the necessary for the guitarist: 20 quality effects, a speaker emulator, a good drum machine with 30 patterns and 80 ready to use patches. All this at a very low price.

Effects (Pedals and Floorboards)

    CS9
  • Chorus | Ibanez
    CS9

A reissue that has in common with the original version the analog circuit, a rarity on the modern market, and the simplicity. Only two knobs: Speed and Width, but, notwithstanding this, the pedal is flexible and versatile.

  • MD-2
  • Distortion | Boss
    MD-2

It is difficult to use but this Boss pedal doesn't disappoint. The natural context of the MD-2 is the Heavy Metal or the Hard Rock. The sound can be slightly tinny but it's valid. The price is good.

  • G3
  • Floorboards | Zoom
    G3

13 amplifiers, 94 stompboxes and 100 patches. An amp simulator and an audio interface. A looper, a drum machine and a tuner. Two softwares: Steinberg Sequel LE and Edit&Share.
