Boss DN-2 Dyna Drive Effects Pedal : Review

DN-2 Dyna Drive

The novelty

It reacts to the intensity of your picking, thanks to the Dyna Amp technology, a function included in the Cube-60, a Roland amp. This technology allows an automatic transition from a clean sound to a powerful Overdrive depending on the picking dynamics. We will see, during the review, that the dynamic reactivity is little homogeneous and, sometimes, not audible. We will speak about this later.

A classic Overdrive

Like all the pedals of this type, or the most part of them, it is equipped only with three controls.

Knobs for the adjusting
  • Level
  • Like always, the general volume, but when this knob is at the minimum, at zero, also the original signal is completely absent, not only the Overdrive. Substantially, it works like a volume for the total sound, not only for the effect. Compared to other devices of the same type, this is an important difference.

  • Tone
  • It modifies the quantity of the treble, so, turning it clockwise, makes the sound brighter and with a strong attack.

  • Drive
  • This control lets you adjust the effect quantity. I have to say that when the value exceeds the half, the dynamic responsivity is less audible, and the signal character becomes rather digital.

Some settings

The manual includes some settings that can be useful in the most common contexts.

General opinion

Like i said at the beginning of this review, it is equipped with a new Roland technology, called Dyna Amp. It is really capable to produce a different sound according to the picking intensity, and in fact it works well. Initially, perhaps, a bit of practice is necessary, but the DN-2 doesn't disappoint and the quality is good. It costs more than other Boss products, but it can be a good added value in your rig.

    Röttweiler

A powerful Distortion suitable to Hard Rock, Metal, Trash Metal, Power Metal and so on. It has been designed to reproduce the feel of an high-gain tube amp. The analog circuit and the quality components justify the price.

  • NDR-1 Nova Drive
  • Distortion | TC Electronic
    NDR-1 Nova Drive

All the necessary for Overdrive and Distortion, each one with dedicated controls, and a switch for the signal routing that expands the possibilities of the musician. The circuit is completely analog. A great TC Electronic product.

  • Dark Matter

    Dark Matter

It works very well and turns out particularly versatile. It is equipped with a 2-position switch, called Voice, that can dramatically alter the guitar tone. An important characteristic is that this is an all-analog pedal.
