Famous, but there are many versions
A well-known Boss product, but with many different models. Our review is about the latest version on the market.
Controls
When you connect the guitar cable, the DS-1 turns On.
- Tone
The equalization. If you want a more sharp sound, rotate the knob clockwise. This will cut lower frequencies. Counterclockwise for more warmth.
- Level
It modifies the ratio between the effect and the direct guitar signal. Obviously, its position depends on many factors. Your guitar, your taste, what you are playing.
- Distortion
It increases the depth of the effect and the length of the sustain.
Sample Settings
- Hard Rock
- British Punk
- American Rock
- Natural Clip
- Crunch
- Mild and Warm
- Fuzz
- Fusion
Keeley Ultra Mod
The most famous mod of the DS-1. It produces a Marshall like tone, perfect for a sound similar to the sound of the AC/DC, Van Halen or Steve Vai. It provides a 2-position switch, that increases lows response and distortion range, and more output level of the signal.
Used by many famous guitarists
For example Steve Vai, Larry Saltzman (Simon&Garfunkel), Rob Espinosa, Kid Rock, Dan Spitz, Dan Lawson, George Lynch, Neil Zaza.
Opinion
It can be loved or hated. It depends on many factors. My personal opinion is that if you understand how to use the Tone it can make a good job, considering the low price of this pedal. The real problem is just a correct use of this control. Yes, the distortion is a bit digital, but with a good pickup the problem isn't extraordinary.
