Zoom H4 Handy Recorder : Review

The X/Y configuration eliminates any difference between the two channels, left and right. The two unidirectional condenser microphones are equipped with a gain switch of +6/+20/+30dB. The maximum sound pressure level is 120dB SPL. Really remarkable.

Audio specifications

The A/D and D/A converters are at 24-bit with 128x oversampling and a sampling frequency of 44.1kHz, 48kHz and 96kHz. Two formats: WAV and MP3. With the included 2GB SD card it provides a recording time of 190 minutes in WAV at 44.1kHz and 16bit, 34 hours in MP3 at 44.1kHz and 128kbps. Obviously, these data must be considered an approximation, since the real value depends on many factors.

For the guitarist

A complete effects list, rather rare in a so compact device. It includes many emulations of famous amplifiers and stomp boxes, various classic effects for guitar and voice, like reverb, chorus, flanger, delay and so on, and a compressor with a limiter. They are organized in 60 patches.

It is even flexible

The USB connection, together with an excellent hardware that guarantees against latency, makes it a perfect audio interface. A good editing software is included: Cubase LE 4. Very interesting. You can connect, for example, your guitar to the Hi-Z input, that is just for an instrument, and use the recorder like an interface for the PC. Everything is fast, easy and works. Excellent.

General opinion

The H4 is a Zoom product of great success and on the market there isn't a so complete device at this price: Excellent audio features, many functions for a perfect job, a complete effects list, professional inputs and a good editing software.

If we observe the main technical specifications we cannot consider this device modern. Therefore, certainly, the price is excessive. Anyhow, it is equipped with some very useful functions.
