Roland Edirol R-44 Handy Recorder : Review

Edirol R-44

In a very compact size it provides the most important effects, inputs with Phantom Power, and, in addition, some very valid functions. The synchronization of two units is much interesting since it expands the possibilities of the user. 192kHz/24-bit are a guarantee for a good final result. It is not cheap, it costs approximately 800 Euros, but if you are looking for a professional device, but portable, it can be a good solution. Let's see specifications and characteristics.

Audio specs

It can record four indipendent tracks. The user can select the most suitable sampling frequency, 44.1kHz/48kHz/88.2kHz/96kHz, at 16 or 24-bit. Two formats: WAV and BWF. Four inputs and four outputs. Each connection provides an XLR/TRS jack, with Phantom Power. In addition it is equipped with digital input and output.

Effects and dynamics controls

It provides, on each input, a limiter and a low-cut filter. The user can apply a set of quality studio effects that aren't available when 192kHz sampling frequency is selected. Let's see the list.

  • 3-band EQ
  • 6-band Graphic EQ
  • Noise Gate
  • Enhancer
  • Comp & DeEsser
  • MS Mic Mixing

The synchronization

It can be connected to a second unit, so to obtain 8 channels. The second can be controlled via the first.

General opinion

The R-44 is, certainly, a quality product, with two added values. The first is that this is really a portable recorder that can operate with four batteries. The second is the possibility to synchronize two units. It is rather expensive, but, like i said at the beginning of this review, if you are looking for a professional device for your music, but portable, it can be a very good solution.

A product that can be the perfect solution for who is looking for a cheap device but with all the necessary for a good final result. The display is much large and the autonomy, really remarkable, is an important added value.

Rather cheap, it allows two settings for the microphone sensitivity, and provides the Intelligent Noise Cut, a function that reduces the environmental noise. Up to 98 position markers for each file.

Clearly, a product for the musician, above all a guitarist. It is equipped with an amp simulator, 55 effects, the overdubbing function, a drum machine, a low cut filter, and an analog limiter. It is compatible with the MP3 ID3 tags (up to 2.4 version).
