Roland Micro Cube GX Amp : Review

Roland Micro Cube GX

The new version of a great success

The Micro Cube has always been, in its category, a great commercial success. We are speaking about an ultra-compact amp that can be useful in many different circumstances. With the new version, the GX, Roland has added many advanced features and some improvements that make this product perfect to practise or where is necessary a quick setup for the guitar.
Let's remember that it can be powered with the included AC adaptor or with 6 batteries, also rechargeable.

Features

Notwithstanding the ultra-compact size it turns out really flexible, thanks to an advanced electronics. The image below shows the main controls.

Controls panel

COSM

It provides 8 different emulations for all the possible contexts, included a specific setting to use the amp with a vocal microphone. In addition to the knob for the type the Micro Cube GX is equipped with three dedicated controls (Gain, Volume and Tone). The list:
ACOUSTIC SIM, JC CLEAN, BLACK PANEL, BRIT COMBO, CLASSIC STACK, R-FIER STACK, EXTREME, MIC.

Effects

5: Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, Heavy Octave. The knob adjusts the volume of the single effects, but there isn't a control for the parameters. In addition it includes a dedicated control for the Delay and the Reverb.

Memory function

With the Memory function a specific setting can be saved, but the use is rather limited. The only possible use is the comparison between two different sounds.

i-CUBE LINK

The most important feature. It is an interface for IOS devices that provides a 2-way communication with an iPhone, an iPad or an iPod. It can be used for many different purposes. For instance, you can jam on a music track on the iPod, or you can record directly on the iPad. It is, as a matter of fact, an input and an output at the same time. In addition Roland provides a free app for IOS devices, CUBE JAM, that has been designed just to be used via the i-CUBE LINK.
This feature transforms the Micro Cube GX in a very interesting product for practice or jamming.

An interesting toy

In my opinion, considering the good price, about 130/140 euros, it is a very valid product. The sound is honest and with the i-CUBE LINK the Micro Cube GX becomes an interesting and amusing toy. It is available in three colors: red, white and black.

It produces a good tone, both the clean and the distortion, but it seems not much flexible. The CD input is a good added value. Moreover, it is equipped with a footswitch.

    '65 Twin Reverb

The Vibrato works only if the footswitch (optional) is plugged in.

The main characteristic of this Cabinet is the presence of the four G12C 25 Watt Celestion Greenbacks. These speakers have been designed for the Limited Edition Jimi Hendrix Super100JH stack.
