A compact Portastudio

The DP-004 Pocketstudio continues the Tascam tradition in the digital recording with a compact size without abandoning its philosophy. Knobs instead of menu. All must be immediate, also in a so compact multitrack recorder that can be really considered a portable recorder.

Four tracks for the recording

The DP-004 provides four tracks for the recording, with two tracks that can be recorded simultaneously. This small digital recorder is equipped with a built-in condenser microphone, so the DP-004 can be used anywhere to record music, for example a concert, or simply your inspiration. A function, called Bounce, allows the tracks consolidation so to make room on the other tracks for new audio material. The DP-004 provides some basic editing functions. This small multitrack recorder features an SD Slot and includes a 1GB SD card.

Two 1/4" jacks

Obviously, the built-in microphone is only one of the possible sources of the DP-004. In spite of the compact size, the DP-004 can be considered a real multitrack recorder. The user, thanks to two 1/4" jacks, can connect another microphone or an instrument to the DP-004. In addition, there is a switch to adapt inputs to the guitar level.

The onboard digital mixer

The DP-004 provides an onboard mixer with knobs for level and pan. The user can record all the material on a stereo master track, so to transfer, via the USB, the final audio to a PC.

Final conclusions

The DP-004 Pocketstudio is an excellent Tascam product. In spite of the compact size, the DP-004 can be considered a real multitrack recorder, with some basic editing functions and a digital mixer with real knobs for the settings. My opinion is that the DP-004 is an excellent choice.
