Review

A professional and expensive portable recorder

The PCM-D50 is a professional Sony device for the recording. This portable recorder cannot be considered a cheap product, its cost is approximately 570 Euros, but it is surely a quality recorder, entirely built in aluminum, with two-position stereo microphones (X/Y or Wide), 24-bit/96kHz, ID3 tags recognition, various recording functions and an included software for the editing: Sound Forge Audio Studio LE.

Microphones

The PCM-D50 features two condenser microphones, of high quality, and provides two operating positions: the classic X/Y position and the Wide position. At close range the X/Y position provides the best choice. Alternatively, the Wide position is perfect for a wider spread stereo image.

Four separate circuits

The PCM-D50 has been designed to minimize noise thanks to four separate circuits. The analog audio, the digital audio, the digital recording and the power supply circuit are completely separated. This excellent engineering job guarantees against the electromagnetic interferences and helps to make a perfect recording, clean and crystalline.

The recording functions

The PCM-D50 provides some good recording functions. First of all this digital recorder features a digital limiter, so to avoid distortions. The limiter is inherited from an excellent recorder: the PCM-D1. In addition, the PCM-D50 provides an high filter, with the possibility to select the operational frequency (150Hz or 75Hz) and a 5-second pre record buffer.

The included software: Sound Forge Audio Studio LE

The PCM-D50 features a USB port and includes a basic editing software: Sound Forge Audio Studio LE. The recorded material can be easily transfered on the PC and then it can be edited with the included software. An included software for the editing is always an added value of a portable recorder. The PCM-D50 is, therefore, a complete solution for the recording.

Final conclusions

Well, the PCM-D50 is certainly a quality digital recorder. The excellent electronics, with four separate circuits, allows really a clean recording. 24-bit and 96kHz guarantee a professional job. The large display helps to control everything and all is easy and immediate. The included software allows a good, also if basic, editing of the recorded material. The PCM-D50 is a Sony product, so we can be sure about its quality, but the price, in my opinion, is absolutely excessive. On the market there are many equivalent products at a lower price.
